What You Need to Be Prepared
Income/Paychecks
- The past 6 months if possible, but at a minimum your last paystub(s) for you and your spouse, if appropriate
Paystub(s)
- If either you or your spouse worked more than one job during the past six months, please bring them for each job
Bonus
- In the past six months, please let us know the amount of the bonus at your consultation
Self-Employment
- If either of you are self-employed, an estimate of your average income and expenses over the past six months if you do not have a profit and loss statement prepared
Other Sources of Income
- Child support, retirement, social security, disability, workers compensation, unemployment, 401(k) withdraws, etc. you or your spouse received
Taxes
- Taxes paid to the IRS or state in addition to what was deducted from your paycheck; for example: if you pay quarterly taxes, if you are self-employed and make direct payments to the IRS or state, or if you made a payment to the IRS or state due to back taxes
Money Owed/Debts
- Amount you are behind on your house(s), if appropriate, along with foreclosure notices from the mortgage company’s attorney
- Amount owed for homeowners associations dues
- Amount owed for property taxes on your home
- Amount owed on automobile(s) or the number of payments remaining
- Amount owed for furniture, appliances or computers
- Amount owed to the IRS or state for income taxes
- Amount owed for child support arrearages (This amount cannot be discharged or eliminated in bankruptcy)
- Amount owed and monthly payment for student loans (This amount cannot be discharged or eliminated in bankruptcy)
- An estimate of what is owed for credit cards, gas cards, medical bills, personal loans
- Average amount paid for monthly childcare expenses
- Average monthly medical costs paid out of pocket, excluding health or dental insurance deducted from your wages, for example, copays and coinsurance for doctor visits and prescription drugs, braces, etc.
- If you are married and your spouse is not filing, an estimate of your spouse’s monthly expenses that are solely in his/her name, for example, a car payment, credit card payments, support to elderly family members, child support not garnished from payroll, etc.
- Approximate value of your home, land and any other real property you might own
- Approximate value of your interest in any corporation or partnership
- Approximate value of any other assets for your business including bank accounts, inventory, equipment, etc.
Summary of Debts
- *IMPORTANT* – Add up the total you owe on the different categories of debt. For example, know what your total credit card debt is if you add all of the cards together. Know your total medical bills, total personal loans, total owed for taxes, etc.
