WHAT DRIVES ME

Making a Real Difference Is Why I Became a Lawyer

Before I joined Duncan Law, I spent years in legal aid — working with people in Asheville and Western North Carolina who were facing impossible situations and had nowhere else to turn. Housing instability, domestic violence, public benefits denials: the common thread through nearly all of it was financial pressure.

Bankruptcy law goes straight to that root cause. When someone comes to me buried in debt — facing foreclosure, wage garnishment, creditor calls at all hours — and we find a legal path through it, that change is immediate and concrete. It matters to that family in a way that’s hard to overstate.

I grew up in Greensboro, went to UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad and law school, and chose to build my career in Asheville. This is my community. When I help someone here get a fresh start, I’m not just doing my job — I’m doing something I believe in.

IN ANNE’S OWN WORDS

From the Concert Hall to the Courtroom

Most people don’t start law school with a master’s degree in clarinet performance. I did. I spent years at UNC Chapel Hill studying music — first earning a bachelor’s degree, then a master’s — before deciding that the work I wanted to do in the world wasn’t on a concert stage.

That pivot wasn’t impulsive. Music taught me a great deal about discipline, precision, and what it takes to pursue something difficult over a long period of time. Those habits translated directly to law school — and to the kind of careful, thorough work that legal cases require.

After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law in 2012, I clerked for the Virginia Beach Circuit Court before returning to North Carolina. I landed in Asheville, joined Pisgah Legal Services, and spent years doing access-to-justice work with clients who genuinely needed it.

What I learned in legal aid is that the people who come to us for help are not looking for sympathy — they’re looking for someone who will take their situation seriously and tell them the truth about what their options are. That’s the standard I hold myself to in every case.

LIFE IN ASHEVILLE

Tennis, Two Corgis, and a Deep Affection for Western NC

Anne has lived in Asheville for over a decade. It’s not a place she landed by accident — she chose it, built her career here, and has spent years invested in the community in ways that go well beyond her legal work.

She’s an avid tennis player and a devoted corgi owner. She’ll talk about the dogs with the same enthusiasm she brings to just about everything else.

The music background hasn’t gone away. That kind of disciplined practice — the long hours of repetition, the attention to detail, the commitment to getting something right even when it’s frustrating — shows up in how she approaches legal work. The clients who work with her tend to notice it.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A Few Things People Usually Ask

I focus on Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy for individuals and families in Asheville and Western North Carolina. Chapter 7 eliminates most unsecured debt in a matter of months. Chapter 13 is a structured repayment plan that lets you keep your property — including your home — while catching up on what you owe. If you’re not sure which chapter fits your situation, that’s exactly what a free consultation is for.

My background is in legal aid — I spent years at Pisgah Legal Services in Asheville helping people who had nowhere else to turn. Financial instability was one of the most common threads running through almost every area of law I touched there: housing, domestic violence prevention, public benefits. Bankruptcy law goes to the root of that. Helping someone eliminate overwhelming debt or save their home is one of the most direct ways I know to change a person’s trajectory.

Significantly. At Pisgah Legal, I worked with clients who were going through some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable — and who often had no prior experience with the legal system. That experience taught me to explain things clearly, to listen before I advise, and to treat every client’s situation as the serious and consequential thing it actually is. I bring that same approach to every bankruptcy case I handle at Duncan Law.

I love it. I’ve lived in Asheville for over a decade and I’m genuinely invested in this community. Western North Carolina has a unique economic landscape — a mix of long-established families, small business owners, and people in industries that don’t always provide financial stability. I know this area, I know the Bankruptcy Court, and I know what the people here are dealing with.

Call us or schedule a free consultation online. The call is free, there’s no obligation, and by the end of it you’ll know exactly where you stand — whether bankruptcy is the right path, which chapter applies, and what the process looks like from here. We answer calls 24/7.
